The Technology

Hydrogel microparticles (HMPs) are composed of 3D crosslinked polymers on a microscopic scale. Due to their special material properties, they have become an important class of pharmaceutical formulations in the biotechnology and biomedical field. Current methods to produce HMPs such as microfluidics and batch emulsion have several drawbacks such as large particle size distribution, yield, cost, and the slow rate of particle production.A new simple and efficient, one step method to produce HMPs renders wide range of controllable particle size distributions in a short (1 minute) process. The HMPs can be produced with standard lab or manufacturing equipment.

Advantages

  • Control of the size and the dispersity of the formulated HMPs
  • High yield
  • High production rate
  • Low complexity
  • Controllable particle size distributions

Applications and Opportunities

  • Rapid or sustained release of drugs
  • Targeted drug delivery
  • Bio-inks for 3D printing
  • Scaffolds in tissue engineering
