Short Bio

Professor Emeritus Dorit Ben-Shachar is the Director of Res. Lab of Psychobiology, Neurosciences, Bruce and Ruth Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, Technion IIT. She has established her lab together with the Psychiatric Devision In the Rambam Health Care Campus. Till recently she was the Head of Research of the Division of Psychiatry. Among other activities she is currently Chairperson, Steering Committee, Brain Science Knowledge Center for Behavioral Research in Animal Model of Neurodegeneration, Member of the Inter-University Forum of Medical Sciences in Israel and Israel representative in the management committee in the European Cooperation in Science & Technology (COST). She won several national and international prizes including the NARSAD research award. Her previous research was on the involvement of iron and melanin in health, develpment and in Parkinson’s disease. Currently she is investigation the involvement of mitochondria in mental disorders in general and in schizophrenia in particular. She was among the very first to suggest impaired energy metabolism in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. She has published numerous highly cited articles, and instructed tens of students.
