Short Bio

Shenhav Cohen is a leading expert in the field of muscle atrophy, and the molecular mechanisms underlying myofibril loss and muscle wasting in disease. Her lab masters two areas in cell biology, the biochemistry of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) and muscle biology/physiology. Research in her laboratory, at the faculty of biology at Technion Israel, brought major breakthroughs and new concepts into the UPS and muscle fields by uncovering the cellular and catabolic biochemical events leading to muscle wasting. The group has developed tools to study in vivo the molecular mechanisms underlying the loss of specific subunits from the myofibril and presented the first models for myofibril disassembly during atrophy as an ordered process.
