Moshe Gavish received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and a Ph.D. degree from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot followed by a postdoctoral period at John Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore in the laboratory of Prof. Solomon Snyder. After the post-doctoral period he received a position of a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine in the Technion institute of Technology and in 1998 received a full professor position. His main field of research is the 18 kDa translocator protein (TSPO), demonstrating the role of this protein in cell proliferation, steroid synthesis, apoptosis, cancer, inflammation and neuro-degeneration. The lab developed a drug delivery system based on liposomes for the treatment of neuro-degenerative and brain diseases.
