The Technology

Some of the most potent bioactive compounds (nutraceuticals and drugs) are poorly bioavailable, which is a major hurdle towards harnessing them for preventing/curing diseases. Specifically, Astaxanthin (AX) is a red xanthophyll carotenoid found mainly in algae (notably Haematococcus Pluvialis microalga) and marine animals. AX is a stronger antioxidant than vitamin E and β carotene but has very low oral bioavailability. The new technology utilized a potato protein (PP) based delivery system for increasing oral bioavailability of lipophilic bioactives (nutraceuticals and drugs) such as AX for the enrichment of food and for dietary supplements, or oral delivery of lipophilic drugs.

Advantages

  • Non-allergenic natural plant based ingredients
  • Dramatically enhances bioavailability
  • Simple, inexpensive

Applications and Opportunities

  • Dietary supplements, drugs, and also food and beverage products, where transparency is not required, but the solubilization and protection of bioactives is desired, and the “all-natural ingredients” and Kosher-Parve label is desired.
