The Technology

Current technologies to detect the development of underground cavities such as sinkholes or cross border smuggling tunnels require complicated and expensive data acquisition techniques.
Fiber optics buried at shallow depth enable continuous, distributed monitoring of soil deformations along tens of kilometers using a single analyzer. Our post-processing algorithm enables detection of very small soil displacements and distinguishes between signals due to the development of underground cavities and above-ground factors affecting the optic fiber such as rain or vehicles passing nearby.

Advantages

  • High sensitivity
  • Cavity localization
  • Cost
  • Easy to implement

Applications and Opportunities

  • Detection of tunnels excavation and sinkhole development
